Torch Lake Cleanup with Stand Up for the Great Lakes with Kwin Morris
Each year over the Independence Day holiday, one of our favorite lakes has one of the biggest lake parties in Michigan. The beautiful Torch Lake and its famous Sandbar are the destination due to the easy landing of boats and paddlers onto the soft sand. It is an amazing spot for cooling off on the hot holiday weekend and being immersed, literally, in a social celebration for hundreds of boaters and paddlers.
But not everyone has the health and longevity of the Lake in mind and the it gets littered with trash left behind by those who have yet to understand that individual actions contribute to destroying natural places. But individual actions can also be taken to protect these places.
We at Stand Up for the Great Lakes got involved by doing what we could before the event to educate the public to be mindful of litter, installed trash bins around the sand bar and handed out “Keep It Clean” bracelets.
On the 5th of July, we had a Torch Lake Clean up where we walked, paddled and dove for trash, cigarette butts, cans and other materials still in the water. It was a great community event and we hauled over 50 bags of trash out of the Lake. It is vital to protect our natural resources, not only for our own enjoyment but for future generations. Get involved in cleanups in your community and if we all pitch in, we can make a huge impact.
We are now gearing up for the 90 Lake Huron crossing this fall! Check out our Facebook page and drop us a like!
About Stand Up for the Great Lakes
It all started as a dream to cross Lake Michigan on stand up paddle boards. Once that mission was completed, we soon realized the impact we could make on not only the Great Lakes but all rivers, lakes and streams. Our goal is to cross each Great Lake while raising funds/ awareness for this amazing natural resource. We also hope to educate, protect and advocate. We are surfers, paddlers, kayakers, fisherman, and sailors. We love our lakes – the great ones and the small ones – and the opportunity to make such a significant journey across one of them thrills us.
We are a non profit charity that would love your support.
